Not so much a commission but a swap with a friend Friday, Jun 14 2019

One of our main ‘go-to’ shops in Richmond, Tasmania is Walker & Walker (colonial antiques & campaign furniture) (home wares) (hand crafts) (books) (garden furniture) (good vibes). Ben & malE were collaborating on a table top for our pair of stamped convict made iron trestles. While we were at his house in North Hobart, Ben showed us all the things he found under the floorboards when renovating the kitchen.

Porcelain shards, beads, coins, cutlery, thimbles etc . . . we ended up taking three pieces home with us and these two brooches and mounted beads were created for Ben’s wife Maddy and daughter Hollie.

The first thing we did on our last visit was to hand over to Ben who gifted them that night. He texted back the following day “hey, great to catch up Monday, girls are over the moon and had no idea – thanks again, cheers Ben”

Friends in-the-know update their jewellery because they are continuously improving their look Wednesday, Mar 20 2019

It pays to be able to just swing in when in town, anytime day or evening.

My daughter’s 40th birthday gift commissioned from all her friends Thursday, Mar 7 2019

The call came in from Andi (Andrea McDonald), “what piece of jewellery would Lil like?” Barbara was able to steer it in the right direction . . .

“Just had a quick read of your email, lovely plans! re: jewellery

I know Lil loves this idea.. a single gold edged shell, as a pendant. She’s mentioned it a few times. I think I could make up something similar if you all like it… I’d have to find a good shell but we do have some in the collection – just have to hunt it down. What do you think?” The rest just fell into place . . .

The studio produced an 18ct yellow gold sculptured double sided mount with jump ring and small hinged gold punched disc, a far greater upgrade to the teale-earrings originally discussed. There were more presents, Lil hosted everyone for their staycation at the Calile on James Street, last Saturday night.

Happy Birthday all over again Darling . . .

Just received our copy of Christine Erratt’s new book featuring our Mace Thursday, Nov 22 2018

The Mace was designed by Michael Bryce and his team who collaborated with the Jeweller to the Lost studio in 2005. Barbara and Juan-Luis were the perfect partners to effect this realisation.

Barbara says she didn’t invent *it . . . she just pulled it into her vocabulary Friday, Mar 24 2017

Yes the *wire form with tab settings . . . have been a signature option here at Jeweller to the Lost since the beginning. Ruth and Barbara made a random arrangement of the elements – silver, onyx and the coral-coloured French glass buttons.

Juan-Luis and I always scan and document most stages of the make either on the iPhone or the scanner. Here is the construct in two sides via my scanner – very clean and scrutinised work.

Art deco elements recycled into new wearable pendant by Jeweller to the Lost Thursday, Mar 23 2017

The Barker family women all colluded with Barbara to divide up family pieces, recycle elements and work together to ramp-up the wearability of the things that survived the review. Here is Ruth’s new pendant as constructed in four parts:

An ‘antiques roadshow’ item remade as a commission with her own gems Wednesday, Aug 10 2016

Barbara and Juan-Luis have housed many large gems with their textured rub over setting technique, 18ct yellow gold extruded star wire length and small bale to suit her pendant design and her own gems. Winged its way to Sydney last night and I’m expecting the phone call soon . . . awaiting the oohs and aahs!

Recycled briefs are so interesting in that – with design options and feedback they have their own journey Monday, Nov 2 2015

What started with a request for designs for Mary’s mutton fat jade beads went in another direction, second meeting when her four beautiful old cut Diamonds and a pair of oval Ceylon sapphires dropped onto Barbara’s desk. “Maybe make a lovely pendant for my daughter-in-law with these, then?” Designs were drawn up, diamonds sourced and the task quoted.

Feedback suggested earrings would be more appropriate, additional design and quoting:
