I found the Post Office directories really helpful when researching for the Briggs’ Lanterns project. It’s interesting how names and addresses were catalogued back then. Took me to a totally different place and built up a mental picture of the small town Brisbane once was…
Hey, you might want to go to ephemeral-male blog and read about my German language calendar for Northern New South Wales and Queensland circa1880. That’s right, at that time there was a German language newspaper here in the colony as well:

. . . and also look at the slabs of beast hanging in the butcher shop in Queen Street above, sawdust on the floor and the red paper and string so you never saw blood.
