“The idea was to push the notion of what an artist’s book can be . . . there is very little criticism” – Louise Martin-Chew Saturday, Oct 8 2005

The early press coverage of the Sufferance Show in the Courier Mail – the multiple issues that grew out of the show surfaced later in Mackay at the Artist Book conference – Focus on Artists’ Books 3. Issues such as what actually constitutes an artist book, the curator Jacqueline Armitstead’s choice of artists – people came out and expressed the most varied opinions on these two topics. Barbara and I felt we were well served being chosen in the first place, our collaborative stainless steel book was a delight to conceive, create and fabricate. The theme, the partners in the brief & staging decisions – The State Library of Queensland and Craft Queensland and their associated operatives were a dream team. Malcolm delivered a paper on collecting artist’s books in Mackay and we both were in the audience during the wrap-up program where most of the issues were aired in a spirit of gracious interaction.

The movie set up for Malcolm’s talk at ‘Focus on Artists’ Books 3′ Mackay 2005 Thursday, Oct 6 2005

I had turned my talk slides into a quicktime movie with a sound bed, I intended to play it during the time the audience filed into the auditorium, it didn’t happen . . . Robert Heather couldn’t accommodate it – no worries! My paper on “collecting artists’ books” is shown in slide form (without my notes delivered), these four snapshots are all of one item, an exhibition catalogue I designed for Anne Kirker and the Queensland Art Gallery – Fluxus (and after):

Robert Heather has recently started an a ‘artist books 3.0’ blog using ning – go here to join – (see you there)
